You have a long weekend coming up. You want to leave Delhi behind — the heat, the traffic, the noise — and arrive somewhere that feels genuinely different. You want a private pool, not a hotel pool shared with strangers. You want your group to have the run of the place. And you want to be back in Delhi by Sunday night without having spent half the trip travelling.
Dehradun is the answer more often than most Delhi travellers realise. Here is why, and what to expect.
The drive from Delhi to Dehradun is roughly 300 kilometres along the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, which has significantly reduced travel time in recent years. Depending on traffic and your starting point in Delhi, expect 5 to 6 hours door to door. Leave by 6am on a Friday and you arrive before noon — with a full afternoon at the pool ahead of you.
Delhi NCR → NH 334 towards Meerut Bypass
Muzaffarnagar → Continue on NH 334 towards Roorkee
Roorkee → NH 72A towards Haridwar
Haridwar → NH 58 to Rishikesh, then NH 72 to Dehradun
Dehradun → Chakrata Road towards AruBhi Cottage — 20 min from city centre
The train is a comfortable alternative — the Shatabdi Express from New Delhi to Dehradun takes around 5.5 hours. From Dehradun station, the cottage is 25 minutes by cab.
The usual contenders for a Delhi weekend trip are Agra, Jaipur, or Jim Corbett. Each has its merits, but none offer quite what Dehradun does for a group looking for a private pool villa.
The key differentiator is climate. Dehradun's elevation means it stays meaningfully cooler than Jaipur or Agra in summer — a pool is genuinely refreshing rather than just visually pleasant. In the June–September period, when much of North India becomes uncomfortable, Dehradun holds steady between 20°C and 32°C.
"Opposite a protected forest reserve, AruBhi Cottage feels worlds away from Delhi — yet it is just one night's drive."
If you have driven through the night or left early, the first afternoon should be about nothing more demanding than the pool, the garden, and unpacking at leisure. The outdoor theatre at AruBhi Cottage makes for a perfect first evening — pick a film, order dinner from one of the delivery services that reach the property, and watch under the stars.
Robber's Cave (Guchhupani) is 20 minutes away — a natural limestone cave with a stream running through it, and one of the most distinctive experiences near Dehradun. Sahastradhara, with its cascading sulphur waterfalls, is 30 minutes in the other direction. If you want altitude, Mussoorie is 40 minutes and offers the Mall Road, Kempty Falls, and sweeping Himalayan views.
Check-out is at 11am. A slow breakfast, a last swim, and you are on the road by noon — back in Delhi by early evening. This structure makes a Friday-to-Sunday trip very workable without feeling rushed.
A comparable private pool villa in Goa typically costs two to three times as much as a Dehradun villa, before accounting for flights. A long weekend in Goa for a group of eight — flights, villa, meals — can easily cross ₹1.5 lakh. In Dehradun, the same group can do the entire trip including the drive, villa, and meals for significantly less.
At AruBhi Cottage, rates start from ₹12,000 per night for weekdays and ₹13,000 for weekends — for the entire villa for up to 6 guests. That works out to under ₹2,200 per person per night for a group of six. Add the drive cost and you have a genuinely affordable premium weekend.

Swimwear, sunscreen, and a light jacket for evenings. The cottage provides towels, linen, and basic toiletries. If you are cooking, the kitchen is fully stocked with cookware — just bring your ingredients.
The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has improved considerably. Toll charges apply. Avoid the Haridwar stretch on Sunday evenings — it can be congested with pilgrims returning from the Ganga Aarti. If possible, leave Dehradun by 3pm on Sunday.
